About a year and a half ago, I began dreaming of writing a book about some of the things I’ve learned in our first decade of planting and pastoring Awaken Church. It’s been quite the journey to say the least – not only leading the church, but writing the book! I released my second book, Come Hell or High Water, on September 19 — Awaken Church’s 10th birthday! The heartbeat of the book is about walking by faith through hellfire and high water, fueled by the promises in Isaiah 43:2…
‘When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.’
Isaiah 43:2 NLT
Over the next 3 weeks, I want to cover 3 life-altering truths from this amazing verse…
Walking in victory involves walking through pain.
The wording in Isaiah 43:2 is important. There is no question about pain, suffering, and hardship. God does not say “IF you go through deep waters” or “IF you walk through the fire of oppression,” He says WHEN. Pain is part of the pathway of our obedience. When we follow Jesus, we need to be ready to embrace storms, challenges, and pain.
Although God created the world in perfection, it was quickly contaminated by sin, leading to the pain and brokenness of the world we live in today. Here’s a reminder from Peter…
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.”
1 Peter 4:12 ESV
Don’t be shocked when pain hits. We don’t live in paranoia, waiting for the next thing to go wrong, but we do live in reality, knowing that things will go wrong. Eternal victory is coming, but expect pain along the way. And while you’re in it, instead of asking God to get you out of it, ask Him what He wants you to get out of it!
