As if rescuing the nation of Israel from the world’s greatest superpower, Egypt, wasn’t a big enough task, God gave Moses another massive assignment in the book of Exodus: lead Israel into the Promised Land and conquer the Canaanites. What an assignment! Moses is understandably concerned with who his team will be, but God reminds him of the promise of His presence. “My presence will go with you and I will give you rest” are God’s reassuring words to Moses in Exodus 33.

That’s not just a sentimental promise to Moses, it’s the promise that makes them stand out from all the nations around them. Here’s how he put it…

“…your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”

Exodus 33:16 (NLT)

Everyone is part of a nation, a team, or a family.

Everyone is headed somewhere, on a mission, and moving toward something.

So what would set Israel apart? Moses didn’t want a team jersey, a mascot, or trick play to be the thing that set them apart. He knew the most important and powerful thing was the presence of God.

“Your presence among us sets us apart.”

Can people sense that something is different about you? In the long run, it’s not going to be the success of your business, the amount of money you make, or the really nice car you drive that sets you apart. The most distinguishing factor in our lives and the thing that makes us look so much different from the world around us is the presence of God. When God is present in us, His presence flows through us into every aspect of our lives: relationships, finances, business plans, integrity…

God is with you, but are you living in a way that people can tell?
