There are some things we pray for that are completely out of our control: how the President leads our country, healing for a debilitating sickness, your team winning the Super Bowl… But there’s a big, well known prayer we can pray that is partially up to us to fulfill.
The heart of the prayer Jesus taught His disciples in Matthew 6 says, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10 ESV)
The “as it is in heaven” part of that prayer is out of our hands. There’s nothing we can do about the angels and the worship of heaven. That’s already in motion and nothing we say or do will change that. The part right before that is up to us though: “Your will be done, on earth…”
Although many things that happen “on earth” are out of our control, there’s plenty that is in our control. It’s up to us to make sure that God’s will is done…
In our families, as it is in heaven.
Son, mother, aunt, grandfather… whatever your role is, there’s a heavy weight on your shoulders to make sure you do everything within in your power to ensure that God’s will is done in your family, as it is in heaven.
In our relationships, as it is in heaven.
The way you treat your girlfriend, husband, best friend, mother… should always be done as you know God would want it done in heaven.
In our neighborhoods, as it is in heaven.
Neighbors can be tough to relate to at times, but how you treat those who live near you or are in your life in other ways matter greatly to Jesus! Relate to them, talk to them, and care for them on earth as it is in heaven.
We can’t control all of it, but we should take responsibility for what we can control. And when we do, we get to be the answer to our own prayers!
