“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13 (ESV)

There may be no other profession that lives this verse out more regularly or literally than our military. The constant sacrifice, distance, emotional and physical trauma… It’s a life of sacrifice. It’s a calling that many people willingly walk into for the benefit of their nation.

Today we honor our veterans.

All gave some. Some gave all.

I speak from a non-military perspective now living in a military town. I am now regularly faced with the struggles and realities that military families face as they raise kids in single-parent homes during deployments, make the most of their 2-3-year stays at their current duty station, and constantly wonder about their family members down range or Stateside.

Jenn and I recently saw the movie Indivisible, based on the true story of Army Chaplain, Darren Turner, and his wife, Heather. If you’re not in the military, the movie will give you a first-hand look at some of the struggles military families face. If you are in the military, I’m sure you’ll connect with the movie in a way I can’t. Either way, I recommend seeing it while it’s still in theaters and buying a copy once it’s out on DVD.

Darren and Heather Turner attended Awaken Church years ago while stationed at Ft. Campbell, and Darren served for a little while on my Board of Directors. We ate dinner with them, Darren counseled me through the pain of a miscarriage, and my oldest daughter learned to ride a bike in their driveway! I can tell you first hand what an incredible family and example the Turners are (learn more about them on the Indivisible movie website).

To all of our Veterans, THANK YOU.

Thank you for selflessly serving our country.

Thank you for putting our safety above your own.

Thank you for your example of courage.

We salute you and thank God for you. Our lives will never be the same because of your sacrifice.
