They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
I say a Proverb a day keeps the devil away…or at least at bay.
Today we launch an online reading group through the book of Proverbs and my book Better Than Gold. It’s not too late to join! You can order a book on my website and join the Facebook Group! A group of people from around the nation are joining together as we read and share some of the things we’re learning along the way.
I believe so much in the power of developing a daily habit of spending time in God’s Word. It’s changed my life and I believe it will change yours as well. In fact, that’s part of the story behind Better Than Gold.
I grew up in the church. From the moment I was born, any time the church doors were open, we were there. Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night, and plenty of other extracurricular activities. I grew up around the Bible, but it wasn’t until I was 18 that I started to really love it and personalize it. The summer of my 18th year was very turbulent. I broke up with my girlfriend, my parents’ marriage was on the rocks, and all my future plans were suddenly up in the air. That summer, I heard about a pastor named Warren Wiersbe who had written commentaries on every book of the Bible. I figured that may be an easy way for me to understand more about the Bible, so I grabbed a few of them for $8 each at a local bookstore (this was pre-iBooks and Amazon Prime, if you can imagine!). As I paired his books with the Book, God’s Word came to life like never before!
That’s my prayer for Better Than Gold, Proverbs, and the Word of God as a whole. I pray that as you develop the daily discipline of spending time in God’s Word and pair that with prayer and other Bible study tools, you’ll develop such a deep hunger for God’s Word that you won’t be able to get enough! Whether you’re new to the Bible or decades in, there’s always more to soak in!
