Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.

Who you surround yourself with is who you become.

Don’t believe me? Listen to King Solomon:

“Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.”

— Proverbs 13:20 (The Message) —

Pretty straightforward, right?

If you want your life to fall to pieces, make sure your influencers are people who worship money and success, whose god is their jet ski or social network, and who are willing to regularly cross moral boundaries for personal gain. Make sure they are speaking into your life, coaching you to leave relationships when they get hard or don’t meet your needs any longer, and pushing you to cross boundaries, break promises, and keep your mind on the temporary instead of the eternal. That’s a surefire way to ensure failure, foolishness, and a legacy that ends when your funeral happens.

On the other hand, if you want wisdom, there are some entirely different voices you’ll need in your life.

We become wise when we walk with the wise. Walking implies a slow, steady, and consistent pace. We need people who will support us when we’re hurting, coach us to endure through suffering, encourage us to remain steadfast when the world would say to quit, and do the right thing despite the cost.

Look around and see who’s surrounding you, then make the appropriate adjustments.
