At Awaken Church, we took the month of July to read and study through the book of Proverbs. It’s one of my favorite books of the Bible and one I’ve read more than any other Bible book. We read through it, heard five challenging messages from it (one from me, and four from other guests), plus I emailed out daily devotions and released a devotional book, Better Than Gold. It was quite the month!
I’ve decided to read Proverbs each month for at least the rest of the year, in addition to any other Bible reading plans I’m working on. There are always new insight and truths I pick up on as I journey through it. Reading God’s Word daily takes discipline, especially at first. It makes me think of Joshua as he stood on the border of the Promised Land. God told him:
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
If you work backward through that verse, you’ll see an important progression: success and prosperity come through obedience (doing what is written in it). Obedience only happens when you know what to obey and you’ll only know that when you’re consistently meditating on it. Translation: Godly success comes through consistent study of God’s Word.
You won’t know where to go until you look at the map. God’s Word is a GPS for your soul. Get into God’s Word so it can get into you.
