Everywhere Jesus went, somebody needed Him for something. There were even times that Jesus went somewhere specifically to get away from people for a bit, but people tracked Him down! And yet, He was always so compassionate when they found Him.
I’m always intrigued by Jesus’ interactions with people who want healing. Compare these two stories with me real quickly…
While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
– Luke 5:12 ESV —
And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
– Mark 9:22-23 ESV —
Did you catch the subtle difference in their requests? It’s just one simple word: If you will vs. if you can.
In Mark, when the man says, “If you can,” Jesus is shocked. It’s as if Jesus is saying, “If I can?! Do you know who you’re talking to?!”
Here’s what we have to remember: Although God doesn’t always answer prayer in the way we ask, it is never His ability that is in question.
We need to get out of the habit of questioning God’s ability and instead begin questioning our timing. If He hasn’t answered your prayer the way you wanted, rest assured that it’s not because He can’t. It’s because He has something better in store. His timing and plan are always better than ours!
