Inevitably, you’ve met someone who loves to talk about themselves. Comedian Brian Regan calls them “Me Monsters.” You know the type… “My boat…my vacation…my portfolio…my investments…my promotion…” Nobody likes a Me Monster. However, as much as we hate bragging, believe it or not, God actually encourages it…

but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.

— Jeremiah 9:24 ESV —

Obviously, God isn’t encouraging bragging in the typical self-centered way we think about it. He’s encouraging boasting in a God-centered way. He wants our boasting to be about our relationship with Him. Here’s what that looks like…

Instead of bragging about your accomplishments, boast about God’s accomplishments.

Instead of pointing back to your success, point to God’s faithfulness to answer prayer.

Instead of bragging about material things, focus your story on the eternal.

Like a braggart so easily turns the conversation back to his or her accomplishments, what if we steered conversation back to how good God is?

When people think of me, I want them to think of someone who “understands and knows God.” Nothing else I’ve done or will do matters!

“Only one life ’twill soon be past.

Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
