Have you ever wondered why making time to get into God’s Word feels like a battle? Because it is a battle.

Have you ever wondered why keeping your mind from wandering during prayer feels like a fight? Because it is a fight.

Have you ever felt like temptation is everywhere and every day is a struggle? Life is a struggle.

We have a battle to fight (see Ephesians 6 for a description of our enemy and definition of our weaponry) and work to be done. I think Nehemiah and his wall-building crew give a good visual for how our lives should look.

Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other.

Nehemiah 4:17 (ESV)

Tool in one hand, weapon in the other.

Trowel in the left hand, sword in the right hand.

Get to work; go to war.

God has equipped us with the tools and weapons we need to build the walls and fight the battles. It’s up to us to be serious about working and warring.

Dig deep and fight hard today. Remember that we are God’s fellow workers (1 Corinthians 3:9) and more than conquerors (Romans 8:37).

Don’t put your trowel down – there’s work to be done.

Don’t put your sword down – there’s a war to be won.
