Three times in Hebrews 3-4, the author of Hebrews quotes a passage from Psalms, “If you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

“If you hear His voice…”

When I was growing up, I often selectively listened to my dad’s voice. If I didn’t like what he was saying, or didn’t want to do it, it seemed easier to pretend I didn’t hear it. Now, as a dad, I am periodically on the receiving end of selective listening. I am reaping what I sowed.

Spiritually, when God speaks in a way you don’t like, or says to do something you don’t want to do, what is your response? With God, we don’t have the option to pretend we didn’t hear. Selective listening may have temporarily gotten you out of chores when you were a kid, but it doesn’t work with God. He knows that you hear and isn’t fooled by your lack of response.

Spoiler alert: when God speaks and we respond, no matter the level of discomfort we face, the outcome will always be glorious.

Make time to listen, then step out in obedience despite the challenges ahead. God’s commandments are His enablements.
