Paul was so proud of the Christians in Thessalonica. He professed his love to them in the second chapter of his first letter to them – not in a weird romantic way, but in a proud-dad way. He went so far as to say that one day when he met Jesus, the first thing he’d talk about would be them!
For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.
1 Thessalonians 2:19–20 (ESV)
They weren’t overnight successes by any means, but they did seem to grow and mature faster than many others. Their secret isn’t much of a secret though – it’s a strategy. Paul lays it out real simply…
…when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 (ESV)
They “received” God’s Word, welcoming it into their lives, then they “accepted” God’s Word, taking hold of it so it could take hold of them. God’s Word is just that – it’s God’s Word. It’s not a book of human wisdom and opinion, it’s alive and active, divinely inspired, and able to change your life if you’ll let it.
Remember what God gave us His Word for…
Milk for our nourishment – Heb 5:12-14
A mirror for reflecting – James 1:23-25
Food for our growth – 1 Cor 3:1-2
Fire in our bones – Jer 20:9
A sword to fight with – Eph 6:17
The seed that was sown – 1 Pet 1:23
A lamp for guiding – Ps 119:105
A light for illuminating – 2 Pet 1:19
Honey for enjoyment – Ps 19:10
A hammer to break with – Jer 23:29
Here’s our strategy for God’s Word: let it in, then let it loose. Let it loose on your pride, your priorities, your sin, your shame, and your selfishness.
