Each Monday we are taking a look at the Awaken Code. It’s the why behind what we do…but it’s not just for Awaken Church – it’s for all followers of Jesus.

Code Part 3

God’s Word defines us.

Awaken Church is founded on, shaped by, and focused on the exposition of God’s Word. We believe God’s Word is alive and active and will preach it as such, regardless of whom it offends.

God’s Word defines us. Being defined by something means we are not defined by plenty of other things: our experiences, failures, emotions, opinions, culture, just to name a few. Like the prophet Ezekiel had to “eat the book” before he could deliver the message, before we can be messengers, we must absorb the message.

Awaken Church is founded on God’s Word. That may or may not be true for you personally, but unfortunately, you can’t change your foundation. However shaky your original spiritual foundation may be, God can rebuild and reestablish if you let Him.

Awaken Church is shaped by God’s Word. This is ongoing. As Christians, we are constantly in need of shaping, honing, pruning, and tweaking. It’s not a one-time thing; it’s a lifelong process.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

John 15:1-2

Although it can be painful, rest in the realization that God prunes us in order to produce more growth.

Awaken Church is focused on God’s Word. The Jews were known as “the people of the book.” Whereas “shaped by” is passive, “focused on” is active – it requires a pursuit. Whenever you meet someone who knows God’s Word well, it didn’t happen by accident. They’ve spent time in it. There is no other way.

We believe God’s Word is alive and active and will preach it as such, regardless of whom it offends. Our belief in the power of God’s Word produces an unapologetic approach to how we handle it. Since God’s Word is alive and active, it should lead to great confidence. We’re not out to offend people, but if we’re going to offend someone with something, let’s offend them by lovingly speaking truth into their lives.
