Each week I share a thought from the previous week’s reading here.

I remember back in the day when my dad bought one of those adhesive label makers for our family. He planned to label only the necessities. I had a different idea. It changed the game because suddenly, no one could use the excuse that they didn’t know something belonged to me. I put my name on everything!

I’ve discussed before that the Bible wasn’t written about us, it was written about God. Although you and I are not the main characters, personalizing Scripture is a really beneficial practice… especially when it comes to prayer! This is a trick I learned from my mom, who is a faithful prayer warrior. Allow me to illustrate with the Apostle Paul’s prayer from Colossians 1.

“God, I’m asking that you fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so I will walk in a manner worthy of You, fully pleasing to You: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to Your glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified me to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. You have delivered me from the domain of darkness and transferred me to the kingdom of Your beloved Son, in whom I have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Colossians 1:9–14 personalized

That’s beautiful, isn’t it?

Not only is this a great way to pray Scripture for yourself, you can do the same thing to pray for others – family members, friends, a prodigal son or daughter, your pastor…

Thankfully you’ll never need to wonder what or how to pray any more! Grab a Psalm or one of Paul’s prayers and put your name on it as you pray!
