Each week I share a thought from the previous week’s reading here.

Paul is easily the most well-known and prolific church planter and preacher of the New Testament Church. God used him significantly to spread the gospel, launching it from a small town in Israel to across the globe throughout the known world.

And yet, by Paul’s own admission, his influence was limited.

In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul mentions in passing “the area of influence God assigned to us” (2 Corinthians 10:13). We know that there were times where God even told Paul not to preach anymore in an area, limiting his influence (read Acts 16 for an example).

As I read that recently, I was reminded of the influence each of us has been given. Even more so, I was drawn to the word “assignment.” Unlike school when each student is given exactly the same assignment, in life, we’ve all been entrusted with a different assignment of influence. That influence will flex and change in each season and phase of life. Regardless of the season and scope of the assignment, our goal should remain the same: faithfully complete the assignment.

Whether it seems big and important or not, faithfully complete the assignment.

Instead of viewing your assignment in this season as limited, view it as focused:

  • Your children
  • Your neighbors
  • The missions organization you lead
  • The church you pastor
  • The small group you lead
  • The Sunday School class you teach
  • Your co-workers
  • Your aging parents

God has given you a platform or circle of influence for this season. Your job and mine is to faithfully complete the assignment. It may last weeks, months, years, or a lifetime, but as you follow the leading of the Spirit, you will know. Your job is not to determine the influence or the assignment or even to change lives in the middle of that assignment.

I’ll state it again. Our job is simple: faithfully complete the assignment God has given you.
