T.M.I. = Too Much Information.

You’ve been exposed to this before, I’m sure. A newlywed couple giving you too many details about their honeymoon, your nurse friend being too detailed about a wound, or that co-worker who insists on telling you every detail about their latest doctor appointment…

“Spare me the details, please!”

We often feel the opposite with God. We don’t want Him to spare the details, we want Him to share the details. However, like it or not, He regularly withholds details.

John 16 gives one example of this as Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure and the Holy Spirit’s arrival. He tells them, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now” (John 16:12).

It sounds like Jesus is teasing them with secrets, but in reality, He is demonstrating grace. Thousands of years prior, King Saul had proved his point. In 1 Samuel 28, in his desperation to find out the future about which God was silent, King Saul consults a medium. The medium calls up the spirit of Samuel who tells Saul that he and his sons will be dead by the following day. Saul responds how any of us would respond if we heard news like that: “Saul fell at once full length on the ground, filled with fear” (1 Samuel 28:20).

There are many details about our future that if God told them to us now, we would be paralyzed with fear. We often think we want God to share the details with us, but I believe He demonstrates His grace to us not by sharing, but by sparing us.

As you learn to listen to God’s voice and step out into the unknown, there will be plenty of challenges and obstacles along the way. Thankfully the details He is sparing us from He is fully aware of and will give you the grace and strength to navigate through.

Remember this: the details of your future are on a need-to-know basis. When you need to know, God will let you know. Until then, keep trusting Him!
