November is National Adoption Month…but every day is adoption day for God. He’s in the adoption business. In fact, spiritual adoption is not just something God does; it is part of who He is.

Romans 8:15 refers to this gentle, loving aspect of the Holy Spirit by calling Him “the Spirit of adoption.” Finding the fatherless and bringing them into the family is part of His identity.

Earlier in Scripture, Psalm 68 reminds us that God is “a father to the fatherless…and places the solitary into families” (Psalm 68:5-6).

If that is God’s mission, it should be our mission too – pursuing those who are living in a spirit of fear, enslaved to their own desires, and isolated.

When Paul spoke of adoption to the Roman Christians in Romans 8, the illustration of adoption would have been deep and meaningful to them. Think about these Roman adoption laws in light of the gospel:

An adoptive father was careful and purposeful in his choice of an adopted son, as that son would be chosen specifically to carry on the family name and inheritance.

Romans 8 tells us that as children of God, we are heirs with Christ and destined for glory! We carry the family name as we follow God’s lead and He changes our lives.

Roman adoption was extremely difficult, but once completed, it was permanent. A biological son could be disinherited, but not an adopted son. Adoption was final.

Ephesians 1 describes the Holy Spirit as the “down payment” of our salvation. We didn’t earn salvation, so we can’t “un-earn” it. In Christ, your salvation is as secure as God’s grip is tight!

Once the adoption was complete, all outstanding debts against the adopted son were canceled and his former way of life wiped clean.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says that in Christ, you are a new creation. The old is gone and the new has come. There is a clear distinction in the life of a follower of Jesus from their life before Christ to their life with Christ. We are forgiven and made clean!

If you know Jesus, welcome to the family of God!

If you don’t know Jesus, He’s inviting you in to be forgiven and experience true life found only in Him!
