Independence Day is just days away. We’ll scarf food down and blow fireworks up as we celebrate our freedom as Americans. We remember July 4, 1776 as the date our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence, officially marking the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.
Independence Day is truly a day of celebration, however, for followers of Jesus, every day is a day of in-dependence on God. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, Jesus is holding it all together…
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Colossians 1:16-17 ESV
For years now, I’ve tried hard to establish a habit of starting each day in prayer and in God’s Word as a way of declaring my in-dependence on God. Every day as I open God’s Word to learn more about Him and talk to Him throughout the day, my heart is humbled as I remember my inability and my utter dependence on God for every breath. One of the many valuable rewards of prayer is its humbling effect on our prideful spirits. The very act of praying proves our inability apart from God’s intervention.
Our nation fought hard for independence and our souls naturally fight for the same. Let’s fight hard to remember how reliant we are on God.
I declare today and every day till we die “IN-DEPENDENCE DAY!”
