The family you grow up with is very influential to who you are: geographically, socially, religiously, culturally… Physically and spiritually, whose you are changes who you are.
Regardless of your memories (or current circumstances) regarding your earthly family, when you put your faith in Jesus, you are welcomed into a spiritual family. In that case, as a member of a spiritual family, there are a few things you should know…
For you have not received a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have receive the Spirit of adoption, as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 8:15 ESV
When your Father is God, your fear is gone.
Don’t “fall back into fear.” Perfect love casts out fear. Fear is from the devil, not from the Father. You can either be a slave of fear or a son of the Father, but you can’t be both!
You are not choice, but you are chosen.
An adopted child didn’t earn their adoption – they were hand-selected to be part of the family. The New Testament reminds us we are a chosen generation (1 Peter 2:9), chosen in Him before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). You may not be innately valuable (“choice”), but you were hand-selected by the Father to perpetuate His name (“chosen”).
Be confident in who you are in light of Who your Father is.
“Abba! Father!” is a term of endearment and intimacy. Kids call their dad by that title in the comfort of their own home. That should help you understand the level of intimate relationship God wants with us. Your Father is the Creator of the universe, so use His name consistently and confidently. He loves when you call out to Him!
