If you’re not sitting down right now, you might want to be. I have some potentially frightening news to share. Ready?

Today is Friday the 13th.

I know, I know. Shocking. Frightening. Horrifying.

Let that sink in, then let the shock wear off, then keep reading…

No one is 100% sure where that superstition came from, but it’s right in line with our tendency to create things to be scared of. There are more phobias than you may have been aware of…

Pogonophobiacs are afraid of beards.

Arachibutyrophobiacs have a fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of their mouth.

If you have phalacrophobia, you are afraid of becoming bald.

And of course the hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobiacs have a grave fear of long words (that one is just cruel, isn’t it?).

Jesus asked His followers a very important question on the subject of fear and anxiety…

Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

— Matthew 6:27 (NLT) —

Did you know science has proven that not only is worrying not helpful, it’s actually harmful? Stress, anxiety, and worry can actually decrease the span of your life. They make us age quicker! So the answer to Jesus’ rhetorical question is a resounding NO!

All we need is another mythical thing (Friday the 13th) to be afraid of! Don’t freak out when life comes at you. Expect it, embrace it, and pray through it. God is holding onto you. Trouble is guaranteed, but so is victory through Jesus!
