Following Jesus isn’t easy.
I know, shocker. I’m dropping truth bombs over here.
I say that, and we know that, but sometimes hardship along the way and unexpected challenges still seem to catch us off guard.
If anyone knew about challenges when following Jesus, it was Paul (read the end of 2 Corinthians 11 for a list of some of the trials he faced!). In his first letter to the Corinthian church, he said…
for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.
— 1 Corinthians 16:9 (ESV) —
Speaking of wide open doors, sometimes I feel like one of my primary roles as a dad is turning off lights and shutting doors (“Were you born in a barn?!”). We dads shut doors because we know that when doors are open, all kinds of things can come in and go out (bugs, small children, air conditioning…).
The same is true spiritually.
When God opens a door for you, don’t expect only blessings and finances and awesomeness to flow into your life. Know there will also be an enemy waiting behind every door God opens. Don’t be surprised by him. You didn’t think Satan was going to give you a standing ovation for stepping out in faith, did you? He wants to defeat you.
Expect the enemy behind the door, but trust the God who opened the door.
The same God who opened the door will give you the faith and strength to keep stepping out, no matter what comes your way.
