Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s the day of sweets, cupid, conversation hearts, and ridiculously priced Hallmark cards. Oh, and it’s also about love!
Since today is a day to celebrate love, I wanted to highlight one of the main passages in the Bible that highlights God’s love: 1 John 4.
1 John 4:8 – …God is love.
The ORIGIN of love.
God is the origin of love. He is where it comes from and how we learn what it looks like. His self-sacrificing, self-denying, never-ending love is unlike any human love we’ll ever experience.
1 John 4:9 – …God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
The DEMONSTRATION of love.
The Father sent His only Son for undeserving sinners. There is no greater act of love than that! We did nothing to deserve His love, but He freely gave it anyway.
1 John 4:11 – if God so loved us, we also out to love one another.
The RESPONSE of love.
Putting romantic love aside for a moment, John reminds us that God’s self-sacrificing love should change us and the way we relate to others. If you realize God’s love for you, you can’t logically continue to not love those around you (see 1 John 4:20-21 for more).
Whether you have a special someone in your life or not, remember you are deeply loved by the God who is love. He defines love, demonstrates love, and give it so we can demonstrate it to others!
You are loved!
