Have you ever wondered how the Bible was written? Since Scripture is “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16), how exactly did He breathe the words out? The prophetic process remains a mystery to this day. We don’t know much, but 2 Peter 1 gives a quick peek behind the curtain…

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:21 (ESV)

Although that verse doesn’t give us a lot of details, we do know a few things…

No prophecy was ever produced by the will of man.

Prophecies weren’t the ideas of the prophets. In fact, some of them tried to resist prophesying, or even flat out ran (cough, cough, Jonah). Prophecy was God’s idea. He spoke to them, told them to write, and made sure we would have their words today. The book we know as the Bible is so much more than a history book or a book of bedtime stories. It’s a miracle – the “prophetic word” (2 Peter 1:19)!

Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

“Carried along” is an interesting phrase. In Acts 27, that same phrase is translated “driven along” and is used twice to describe a ship being driven by the wind and current. The inspiration of Scripture gives us an incredible template for how God wants to guide our lives. Similar to how these men of God were “carried along” by the Spirit, God wants us to live with our sails up and rudders ready, so we can be “carried along” wherever He wants to take us. And just like a ship driven by invisible wind is the same ship with the same captain and crew, when you are carried along by the Spirit, you are the same person with the same personality, now carried along to a new and better destination!

Are your sails up? Is your rudder ready?

Live in a way that allows the Spirit to carry you along to wherever He wants to take you!
