January 1 is the Genesis 1 of the year. A fresh start, a new beginning, a chance for us to let God do something He’s never done in and through us before. In Genesis 1, the Spirit of God was hovering over the darkness, and on January 1, the Spirit of God is hovering over you as well. Whether you’re a believer in New Years resolutions or not, you have to admit, there’s something fresh and exciting about the clean slate of a new year. Here are three quick things I’d encourage you to do this year…
Since 1 Thessalonians 5 says to “pray without ceasing,” a new year is a new chance to keep shooting for that goal. No matter how good you are at praying, you have not arrived. Pray more. And by “more,” I mean both quantity and quality of prayers. Pray more often and pray with more faith. Believe for more, ask for more, and talk to God more in 2018 than ever before.
Read more books of the Bible and more books in general. If you’ve never read the whole Old or New Testaments of the Bible, this is your year. Make it happen. If you’ve never read the Bible all the way through, 2018 is the year you’re going to finally do it. And while you’re at it with reading, find some other good books to read. Read something that challenges you, inspires you, and something that gets you thinking. You’ll be better for it.
Do less social media so you can do more real socializing. Say no to a few extra meetings this year so you can say yes to more relationships. Get out of the recliner a bit more often, get up a little bit earlier, and get out a lot more. Take big steps of faith, try some new things, branch out into some new relationships.
Let 2018 be the year where you prayed more, read more, and did more for Jesus than ever before. The best news is, if you go big in 2018, you’ll be set to go even bigger in 2019. And isn’t that the point of life?! Don’t settle. God has more a head for you!
