Next time you see a school bus, picture me in the driver’s seat. That was one of my first jobs when we first moved to Clarksville in 2009. Driving a school bus was an adventure, to say the least. One of the things that made it the most challenging was trying to stay focused on the road ahead while also keeping an eye on the action in the back seats. If I wasn’t careful, I would get too focused on what was happening in one direction and I could miss out on something important happening in the other direction. The same is true in life.
As we approach the end of 2017, it’s a natural time to look back, and also to look forward.
Looking back isn’t a bad thing; in fact, it can be a very healthy thing. One thing we say at Awaken is “monuments drive the movement.” Our past success is vital to our future. However, if we get too enamored with the past, we can miss all the great things God wants to do in our future.
For the Christian, “the best is yet to come” is so much more than a cliche wall-hanging you can buy at Hobby Lobby. It’s our anthem. With Jesus, there’s always something better ahead!
So make sure to look back… Thank God for all He’s done this year, how much you’ve grown, and how far you’ve come. But spend more time looking forward than you do looking backward. Dream big, pray bigger, and put some plans in place. God did some great things in 2017, but buckle up for 2018 – His plans are even bigger (see Ephesians 3:20)!
