Did you know that The Walking Dead is not just on TV, it’s also in a book? Actually, it’s in the Book. 2,000 years before the advent of TV, the Apostle Paul wrote about zombies…kind of…
but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.
1 Timothy 5:6 (ESV)
Dead even while she lives. Wow. What a sad and yet common way to live. In context, Paul is talking about the freedom and life that comes from living for others, so he contrasts it against those living for themselves. The irony of Paul’s statement is that in the moment, when we are focused completely on ourselves, we often feel so alive. Sin is fun. For a moment. But the fun won’t last.
Here’s the reminder we need: living for ourselves brings death, but living to serve others gives life.
Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God and the second greatest commandment is like it: love your neighbor as yourself. Go out of your way today to live for Jesus and love others. Selfish indulgence may be fun for a moment, but it leads to death. Living for others is where life is found!
(Also, next time someone tells you the Bible is boring, ask them if they know it talks about zombies!)
