    Wholly Holy

What do yesterday’s pizza, a 3,000-piece jigsaw puzzle, and your scrapbook from your trip to Europe have in common? They’re all things that there’s a good chance you’ll never finish. If there’s one thing we are good at, it’s starting something and not finishing it. Ziploc, Tupperware, and twist ties exist because of that unfortunate characteristic of ours.

Thankfully, God isn’t like that! When He starts something, he finishes it!

God’s desire for us is a wholly holy life. He wants all of us – soul, spirit, and body – sanctified and surrendered. Here are a couple things to remember…

God is our only hope for a wholly holy life.

Salvation is a three-part process: you were saved, you’re being saved, and you will be saved. Paul makes it clear in 1 Thessalonians 5 that sanctification (the ongoing process of salvation) is God’s work. “He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.” We’re not off the hook, but we should remember that we won’t impress God by anything we do. Salvation is God’s work.

God gave us the tools to complete what He began.

In the closing sentences of Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he reminds them of their ongoing need for prayer, unity, and God’s Word. God saves us, but He’s equipped us with the tools to speed up and enhance the process. There will be no growth without them. Reading God’s Word is so important that Paul put the Thessalonian leaders under oath that they would read the whole letter to the church. God’s Word ignored is a calling and life left unexplored.

Grace is the signature of a wholly holy life.

Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians began with “grace to you and peace,” and ends with “the God of peace” and “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.” God’s grace surrounds and supports God’s peace. In fact, we can’t know God’s peace until we understand God’s grace. Grace was the signature on Paul’s letters. Is grace the signature of our lives?
