Every stage of life is filled with wondering about the next stage. From not driving to driving, from teenager to adult, from college to career, from full quiver to empty nest, it’s easy to find yourself daydreaming about the future. The Bible is filled with thoughts about the future, but they should always lead us to live faithfully in the present. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 gives a series of 15 back-to-back commands on how to live in the present in light of the future. Here are a few thoughts to consider…
Lavish love on those who lead.
The Bible is clear that those in spiritual leadership over us should be honored and highly esteemed. The Message says to “overwhelm them with appreciation and love.”
Serve others individually, but always patiently.
We serve those who serve us (spiritual leaders), but also those who don’t serve us. That’s what ministry is about: patient servants meeting pressing needs. Everywhere you turn, someone needs something unique, but they all need our patience.
God’s will for your life should be the focus of your life.
1 Thessalonians contains 2 of the 3 times in all of Scripture where the Bible specifically states God’s will for our lives. In Chapter 5, it says God’s will is for us to live a joyful, prayerful, grateful life despite our circumstances.
Live in a way that does not limit God’s Spirit.
Paul’s literal words to the Thessalonians were “stop putting out the Spirit’s fire.” Our role as followers of Jesus is to cultivate an environment where the Holy Spirit can burn brightly in and through our lives. Never limiting Him, only allowing Him to move freely.
The Rapture, the Second Coming of Christ, the Day of the Lord, the end of the world… they’re all things the Bible speaks of often, but that we shouldn’t allow to distract us from the present.
Despite your past, live faithfully in the present in light of the future!
